Overview

Bhutan Essentials is Gu-Mar’s introduction to the Kingdom of Bhutan. This five-day journey takes you through the country’s three most important valleys: Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha.

Begin in Paro, surrounded by rice fields, pine forests, and mountain views. Explore Thimphu, the world’s only capital city without traffic lights. Then travel to Punakha, the former winter capital, located between two beautiful rivers.

Along the way, visit ancient dzongs, cross Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge, and hike to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. It is a simple and well-planned journey that covers the highlights of Bhutan without unnecessary travel or rushed transfers. Just the essential Bhutan experience, done right.

Trip Highlights

  • Tamchog Lhakhang and its 15th-century iron chain bridge built by Thangtong Gyalpo.
  • Thimphu’s landmarks: Buddha Dordenma, Tashichho Dzong, the National Memorial Chorten and the Motithang Takin Reserve.
  • Dochula Pass (3,100 m) and its 108 memorial chortens framing the Eastern Himalayan range.
  • Punakha Dzong at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu, and one of the longest suspension bridges in the Himalayas.
  • Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple of the “Divine Madman”, reached through rice paddies.
  • The iconic hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest), perched 900 m above the valley floor.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Paro → Drive to Thimphu

Arrive at Paro International Airport. Your Gu-Mar guide and driver will welcome you at the airport and assist you with the required permits. From Paro, drive about 1.5 hours to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. The journey follows the beautiful Paro Chhu and Wang Chhu rivers.

On the way, visit Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century monastery known for its traditional iron chain bridge, built by Thangtong Gyalpo, a famous Tibetan saint and engineer.

Upon arrival in Thimphu, check in to your hotel and take some time to rest. In the early evening, enjoy a relaxed walk around Thimphu town. If the timing is right, you can also explore the local handicraft stalls.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner  |  Overnight: Thimphu

Day 2 – Thimphu Sightseeing → Drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass

A full morning exploring the capital:

  • Buddha Dordenma — a 51.5 m gilded statue overlooking the Thimphu valley
  • Tashichho Dzong — the seat of government and the central monastic body
  • National Memorial Chorten — built in memory of the Third King, alive with locals circumambulating and spinning prayer wheels
  • Motithang Takin Reserve — home to Bhutan’s unusual national animal
  • Optional stop at the Folk Heritage Museum or Handicrafts Emporium

After lunch, drive roughly 3 hours to Punakha, crossing Dochula Pass (3,100 m). On a clear day, the 108 memorial chortens frame an uninterrupted view of the Eastern Himalayan range — a mandatory photo stop.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner  |  Overnight: Punakha

Day 3 – Punakha Sightseeing → Drive to Paro

Morning visit to Punakha Dzong, arguably Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress, set at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers. Walk across the suspension bridge, one of the longest in the Himalayas.

Time permitting, visit Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple built in honor of the “Divine Madman” Lama Drukpa Kunley, reached via a short walk through rice paddies.

Afterward, drive back to Paro (approx. 4–4.5 hours including stops), settling in for the next two nights.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner  |  Overnight: Paro

Day 4 – Hike to Tiger’s Nest (Taktsang Monastery) + Paro Valley

The highlight of the journey: a 4–5 hour round-trip hike (with a break at the midpoint cafeteria) up to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest), perched on a cliff 900 m above the valley floor, where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated in the 8th century. Ponies are available partway for those who prefer not to walk the full ascent.

Afternoon at leisure or optional sightseeing in Paro town:

  • Rinpung Dzong and the traditional cantilever bridge
  • Ta Dzong (National Museum), if reopened to visitors
  • Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples (7th century)

Farewell dinner in Paro.
