Overview
Bhutan from West to East is Gu-Mar Travels & Tours’ most profound and expansive overland odyssey across the entire geographical canvas of the Thunder Dragon Kingdom. Designed for pioneering travelers who refuse to compromise on depth, this 14-day, 13-night traversal journeys beyond the developed west, across the sacred central valleys, and deep into the rugged wilderness of Eastern Bhutan. This is not merely a sightseeing tour; it is a grand Himalayan expedition that traces the ancient trade arteries of the kingdom through shifting dialects, dramatic microclimates, and remote ancestral enclaves where foreign footprints remain a genuine rarity.
Your adventure spans six distinct regions: Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Bumthang, Mongar, and the dramatic valleys of Trashigang. Along this legendary route, you will marvel at iconic landmarks — from the riverside majesty of Punakha Dzong to the gravity-defying cliffs of Tiger’s Nest — but your true transformation occurs in the untamed east. Here, you will wander through weaving villages untouched by time, stand inside clifftop fortresses that once guarded the borders of old, and share home-cooked meals with local families inside generational farmhouses.
To protect you from grueling overland backtracking, this itinerary culminates in a spectacular domestic flight from the eastern sky back to Paro. Striking the ultimate harmony between pioneering discovery and signature Gu-Mar comfort, this is the definitive Bhutan journey — done right.
Trip Highlights
- Three nights in Bumthang, including the remote Tang Valley, Ura village and Mebar Tsho (the Burning Lake).

- A day with the semi-nomadic Brokpa yak herders of Merak.
- A 45-minute domestic flight from Yonphula back to Paro, then the Tiger’s Nest hike.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive at Paro International Airport, where the sudden, jaw-dropping scale of the snow-capped Himalayas welcomes you. Your dedicated Gu-Mar guide and driver will greet you at the arrivals terminal and assist with your entry permits. Begin a scenic 1.5-hour drive along the glacier-fed Paro Chhu and Wang Chhu rivers to the capital city, Thimphu.
Along the way, stretch your legs at Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century monastery famous for its traditional iron chain suspension bridge, hand-forged by the legendary Tibetan saint and engineer Thangtong Gyalpo. Upon arrival in Thimphu, check in to your hotel and rest. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed orientation walk through the colorful storefronts and local handicraft markets of Thimphu town.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Thimphu
Spend a full day uncovering the landmarks and living arts of Bhutan’s capital city. Start your morning at Buddha Dordenma, a massive 51.5-meter gilded bronze statue offering sweeping panoramic views of the entire valley, before joining local elders spinning prayer wheels at the National Memorial Chorten. In the afternoon, visit the forested Motithang Takin Preserve to view Bhutan’s unusual national animal, followed by a visit to the National Institute for Zorig Chusum to see students mastering the 13 traditional arts. Conclude your day at Tashichho Dzong, the impressive fortress housing the throne room and seat of government, viewed as the evening lights turn on.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Thimphu
Leave the capital after breakfast for a 3-hour scenic drive to Punakha, the ancient winter capital. The route climbs steadily up to the magnificent Dochula Pass (3,100 m), where 108 memorial chortens stand against a backdrop of the snow-capped Eastern Himalayan range on a clear day. Descend into the warm, subtropical valley of Punakha and take an easy hike through the rice paddies of Sopsokha village to Chimi Lhakhang, the famous fertility temple built in honor of the eccentric saint Lama Drukpa Kunley (The Divine Madman).
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Punakha
A dedicated day to experience the architectural grandeur and natural beauty of Punakha. In the morning, explore the magnificent Punakha Dzong, widely considered the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan, standing strategically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers. Afterward, walk across the adjacent Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the country, adorned with thousands of fluttering prayer flags. In the afternoon, enjoy a short, scenic uphill hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten for a stunning view of the valley’s terraced fields.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Punakha
Embark on a long, deeply scenic 6-hour journey into the geographical center of Bhutan. Drive across the alpine Pele La Pass (3,300 m), traditionally considered the boundary between western and central Bhutan, and stop to view the centuries-old Chendebji Chorten.
After a stop in Trongsa to view its grand dzong commanding the river canyon, continue over the Yotong La Pass (3,400 m) to drop into the beautiful cluster of valleys that make up Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of the kingdom.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Bumthang
Spend a dedicated day exploring Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples. Visit Jambay Lhakhang, built in the 7th century by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, and Kurjey Lhakhang, where the body-print of Guru Rinpoche is preserved in rock. After a short walk across the Chamkhar Chhu river, visit Jakar Dzong (The Fortress of the White Bird).
In the afternoon, experience an authentic slice of central Bhutanese hospitality by stepping off the tourist track to share a traditional meal inside a local farmhouse, sampling buckwheat pancakes and home-brewed Ara.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Bumthang
Journey off the main highway into the remote Tang Valley, the most secluded of Bumthang’s four valleys. Visit Ura Lhakhang and walk through the traditional, tightly clustered stone houses of Ura village.
On the return drive, stop at Mebar Tsho (The Burning Lake), a deeply sacred pilgrimage site where the treasure-discoverer Pema Lingpa is said to have plunged into the swirling river waters with a burning butter lamp and emerged with holy relics and the lamp still lit.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Bumthang
Prepare for one of the most dramatic and visually spectacular mountain drives in the entire world. Leaving Bumthang, your vehicle winds upward for 7 hours across the wild Thrumshing La Pass (3,780 m) — revealing plunging sheer cliffs, dramatic waterfalls, and changing alpine vegetation.
Cross into Eastern Bhutan and arrive in Mongar, a unique hillside town built entirely on a slope rather than a valley floor. Visit Mongar Dzong, constructed in 1930 using traditional methods without a single nail or written blueprint.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Mongar
Drive 3 to 4 hours deeper into the rugged terrain of the far east toward Trashigang, once the bustling center of the historic trans-Himalayan trade routes with Tibet. Along the way, cross the Kori La Pass (2,400 m), driving past dense banana trees and bamboo groves.
Upon arrival, visit Trashigang Dzong, an incredible fortress built in 1667 that sits precariously on a jagged cliff edge overlooking the sweeping Gamri Chhu river canyon far below. Spend your evening walking the quiet streets of the eastern capital.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Trashigang
Spend a dedicated day exploring the deep artisanal heritage of the east. Drive to Radhi Village, famously nicknamed the “Rice Bowl of the East,” celebrated throughout Bhutan for its ancient tradition of Bura weaving. Watch local women spin raw silk dyed with wild roots and forest minerals.
Later, push onward to Khaling Village to visit the National Handloom Development Project, discovering how traditional eastern motifs are preserved across generations.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Trashigang
Set out on an extraordinary day excursion to the high-altitude valley of Merak, inhabited by the Brokpas, a distinct semi-nomadic group of yak herders. The Brokpas have remained largely isolated from the outside world and maintain their own unique dialect, specialized dress (including unique black yak-hair hats), and rich animistic customs.
Spend your day walking through the village and learning about their ancestral lifestyle before returning to Trashigang for the night.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Trashigang
Drive up to Yonphula Airport for a spectacular 45-minute domestic flight back to Paro, saving you three grueling days of return driving. This flight is an unforgettable scenic experience, offering a bird’s-eye view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
Upon landing in Paro, visit Ta Dzong (The National Museum), housed in a historic circular watchtower, and walk down to explore the grand courtyards of Rinpung Dzong. Spend your evening wandering through the charming storefronts of Paro town.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Paro
The crown jewel of your expedition. Hit the trail by 7:30 AM to beat the afternoon sun and climb 900 meters to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), clinging dramatically to a vertical granite cliff face high above the valley floor. Explore the sacred caves and inner sanctuaries where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century.
After descending, celebrate the completion of your grand cross-country trek with a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath at a local family farmhouse to soothe your muscles, followed by a warm farewell dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Paro
After a celebratory final breakfast, your guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your outbound flight. Tashi Delek — may your grand journey across the Dragon Kingdom bring lasting purpose home.
