Overview

The Bhutan Journey is Gu-Mar Travels & Tours’ 10-day, 9-night flagship expedition into the deeply spiritual heartland of the Thunder Dragon Kingdom. Designed for travelers seeking true depth beyond the classic tourist circuits, this journey breaks through the western valleys to cross the Black Mountains into the ancient, sacred cradle of Central Bhutan — unveiling a side of the kingdom defined by older temples, wilder ridges, and a profound, slow-travel serenity.

Your adventure expands across five distinct valleys, beginning in historic Paro before moving to Thimphu, the vibrant capital operating entirely without traffic lights, and dropping into the subtropical riverside paradise of Punakha. The true discovery unfolds as you journey eastward into the alpine wetlands of the Phobjikha Valley — the protected winter sanctuary of the rare black-necked cranes — and push onward across high mountain passes to the pine-scented valleys of Bumthang, the spiritual birthplace of Bhutanese Buddhism.

Along the way, you will walk the courtyards of ancestral dzongs, share home-cooked meals inside generational farmhouses, and hike through pristine, moss-draped forests. Culminating in an extraordinary domestic flight over the snow-capped Himalayan peaks back to Paro for the legendary hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, this curated itinerary delivers the ultimate Bhutan discovery without unnecessary haste.

In the afternoon, visit the forested Motithang Takin Preserve to view Bhutan’s unusual national animal, followed by a visit to the National Institute for Zorig Chusum to see students mastering the 13 traditional arts. Day 3 – Thimphu → Punakha via Dochula Pass

Leave the capital after breakfast for a 3-hour scenic drive to Punakha, the ancient winter capital. The route climbs steadily up to the magnificent Dochula Pass (3,100 m), where 108 memorial chortens stand against a backdrop of the snow-capped Eastern Himalayan range on a clear day. Descend into the warm, subtropical valley of Punakha and take an easy hike through the rice paddies of Sopsokha village to Chimi Lhakhang, the famous fertility temple built in honor of the eccentric saint Lama Drukpa Kunley (The Divine Madman).

Day 4 – Punakha Valley Exploration

A dedicated day to experience the architectural grandeur and natural beauty of Punakha. In the morning, explore the magnificent Punakha Dzong, widely considered the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan, standing strategically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers. Afterward, walk across the adjacent Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the country, adorned with thousands of fluttering prayer flags. In the afternoon, enjoy a short, scenic uphill hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten for a stunning view of the valley’s terraced fields.

Day 5 – Punakha → Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey)

Begin a scenic 3-hour drive (85 km) climbing steadily past Wangdue Phodrang and heading deep into the Black Mountains toward the pristine, broad glacial Phobjikha Valley. Upon arrival, explore the 17th-century Gangtey Goempa, a major Nyingma monastery perched on a forested hill overlooking the massive valley floor.

Set out on the beautiful Gangtey Nature Trail, an easy 2.5-hour flat walk passing through blue pine forests and cutting across open wetlands. If traveling between late October and February, visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre to quietly watch the endangered wintering cranes through high-powered spotting scopes.

Day 6 – Phobjikha Valley → Trongsa → Bumthang Valley

Embark on an early morning 5.5 to 6-hour journey deeper into the geographical center of Bhutan. Drive across the alpine Pele La Pass (3,300 m), traditionally considered the boundary between western and central Bhutan, and stop to view the centuries-old Chendebji Chorten.

After lunch, marvel at the jaw-dropping Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of the ruling Wangchuck dynasty, which commands the entire river canyon. Continue over the Yotong La Pass (3,400 m) to drop into the beautiful cluster of valleys that make up Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of the kingdom.

After a short walk across the Chamkhar Chhu river, visit Jakar Dzong (The Fortress of the White Bird).

Day 8 – Bumthang → Domestic Flight to Paro

Bypass the grueling two-day return road journey with an extraordinary 25-minute domestic flight from Bumthang Airport back to Paro. This flight is a spectacular scenic experience in itself, offering bird’s-eye views of the snow-capped Himalayan ridges.

Upon landing in Paro, visit Ta Dzong (The National Museum), housed in a historic circular watchtower, and walk down to explore the grand courtyards of Rinpung Dzong. Spend your evening wandering through the charming, colorful storefronts of Paro town.
