Overview

Western Bhutan Explorer is Gu-Mar’s introduction to the timeless landscapes and sacred heritage of the Thunder Dragon Kingdom. Designed specifically for first-time travelers, this comprehensive 6-day, 5-night journey seamlessly bridges Bhutan’s core cultural hubs with its untouched rural soul.

Your adventure begins in the historic valley of Paro before traveling to Thimphu, the country’s vibrant capital operating entirely without traffic lights. Moving deeper into the interior, you will cross high mountain passes to reach Punakha, the ancient winter capital nestled in a warm, subtropical valley defined by majestic fortresses and sweeping rivers. Finally, the true discovery unfolds as you venture off the beaten path into the pristine alpine cradle of the Haa Valley, a remote enclave where traditional village life remains wonderfully unchanged.

Along this carefully measured route, you will walk the colossal courtyards of centuries-old dzongs, cross prayer-flag-draped suspension bridges, and experience the ultimate pilgrimage hike to the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery, suspended precariously on a sheer cliffside high above the Paro valley floor. Striking the perfect balance between comfort and discovery, this itinerary delivers the essential Bhutan experience without unnecessary haste — allowing you to connect deeply with the kingdom exactly as it was meant to be seen.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Paro → Drive to Thimphu

Arrive at Paro International Airport. Your Gu-Mar guide and driver will welcome you at the airport and assist you with the required permits. From Paro, drive about 1.5 hours to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. The journey follows the beautiful Paro Chhu and Wang Chhu rivers.

On the way, visit Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century monastery known for its traditional iron chain bridge, built by Thangtong Gyalpo, a famous Tibetan saint and engineer.

Upon arrival in Thimphu, check in to your hotel and take some time to rest. In the early evening, enjoy a relaxed walk around Thimphu town. If the timing is right, you can also explore the local handicraft stalls.

  • Tashichho Dzong — the seat of government and the central monastic body
  • National Memorial Chorten — built in memory of the Third King, alive with locals circumambulating and spinning prayer wheels
  • Motithang Takin Reserve — home to Bhutan’s unusual national animal

On a clear morning, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake amid thousands of fluttering prayer flags.

Descend into the quiet Haa Valley to explore its pristine, ancestral setting. Visit Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple), two sacred 7th-century sanctuaries. Take a leisurely walk through Haa town and its traditional villages before driving back to Paro in the late afternoon.
