Overview
The Bhutan & Gross National Happiness Study Tour by Gu-Mar Travels & Tours offers researchers and policy professionals an institutional deep dive into the operational mechanics of Gross National Happiness (GNH).
Moving past conceptual theory, the program balances formal seminars led by certified GNH researchers with field site visits. Participants evaluate how GNH indicators actively shape national legislation, municipal urban plans, environmental forestry quotas, and community-led health systems across Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha.
Trip Highlights
- An introductory briefing on the four pillars and nine domains of GNH on arrival in Thimphu.
- A private lecture at the Center for Bhutan & GNH Studies on GNH metrics, indexing and national surveys.
- Site visits and a seminar on green urban infrastructure and Bhutan’s carbon-negative economic policies.
- A field lecture at Dochula Pass on the constitutional mandate to maintain 60% forest cover.
- A study of cultural preservation at Punakha Dzong and rural development at a Paro agricultural cooperative.
- A panel discussion with a tourism official and a Tiger’s Nest field pilgrimage on spiritual ecology.
